What is the Duolingo English Test?

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online English test you take from home on your computer. You do not visit a test centre. You do not travel. It costs $70 and takes about one hour. Results arrive within 48 hours, or 12 hours if you pay for faster delivery.

How does the DET work? Exam structure explained

The test has three parts.

First, a 5-minute setup. You show a valid ID, like a passport or driver's license. The proctor sees your room through your webcam (the camera on your computer). You test your microphone and camera. Skip these checks and your test may not count.

Second, a 45-minute adaptive section. This is where your score comes from. The computer gives you questions that change based on your level.

Third, a 10-minute video interview. You answer open questions on camera. Universities often watch this part to see how you really speak.

What is the DET scoring scale and how does it work?

The DET scores you on a scale of 10 to 160, in steps of 5 points. You get one overall score, plus four smaller scores: Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production. Each smaller score tells universities something specific about your English.

These scores match the CEFR system. CEFR is the standard way Europe measures language levels, from beginner (A1) up to native speaker (C2). Most undergraduate programs want 105 to 120. Most graduate programs want 120 or higher. Check what your university asks for before you book.

How much does the DET cost?

The standard test costs $70. There are no hidden fees. You send your scores to as many schools as you want at no extra cost.

Which universities accept the DET?

Here are some universities that accept the DET, sorted by country.

United States: Yale, Columbia, NYU, University of Michigan, University of California system, University of Texas, Boston University, Northeastern University.

United Kingdom: Imperial College London, University of Birmingham, University of Southampton, University of Bristol, University of Glasgow.

Canada: University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, McGill University, University of Waterloo.

Australia: Australian National University, University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, Monash University.

Ireland also accepts the DET for student visa applications. You need a score of 55 for a foundation program, or 75 for higher education.

One last thing. University rules change. A school that accepts the DET today may not accept it next year. Always check the admissions page before you book.

You can retake the DET as many times as you want. Each try costs $70, or less with a discount code.

Old results stay valid for two years, and you choose which scores to share. So you can keep retaking until you hit your target, then send only the best one.

Where can you practice for the DET?

The DET question types are unique. The adaptive format means you cannot just memorise answers. You need to get used to the interface and the timing.

The official Duolingo free practice test is the closest thing to the real test. It uses the same adaptive system and gives you an estimated score range. Take it at least two or three times before your real test. It is free, and you can use it as often as you like.
